"Yuhuei Pierce is an artist whose creations straddle the aesthetic divide of the past between eastern
and western cultures. Formally trained on each side of the globe, Pierce produces paintings which
display a psychologically-driven understanding of modernism coupled with the studied consideration of
line and form reminiscent of Asian calligraphy. Her paintings also walk a line between abstract
expressionism and minimalism. The pristine white canvases seek to capture movement, be it through
the interplay of colored lines or the sweeping application of varied media and textures. Such an effect
is achieved by balancing her technical training and proficiency with "assuming a monastic mindset."
The results are compositions that transcend the traditional square with one accepted direction of
alignment.
Pierce traveled to the United States from Taiwan in 1980 to study for graduate degrees in sociology
and library science and then went on to pursue a PhD in mathematical sociology at Columbia
University. Her art studies took place at the Academy of Art in Singapore as well as through a private
teacher in London. She maintains a year-round studio in Wake Forest and a summer studio in Kittery
Point, Maine."
